FALLS, Iowa --- Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul said Wednesday he's the only member of a crowded field that is calling for an end to status quo policies, adding that he would end several overseas military engagements and dramatically cut the federal government if president.

In his first visit to Black Hawk County this election cycle, Paul, a 75-year-old Congressman from Texas, focused his message on what he called the strong defense of personal liberty. Among the tenets of that message were opposing current government economic policies, ending foreign military conflicts and overhauling the country's monetary system. He said those were issues no other candidate stressed.
"I think all the other candidates don't fall into one category, except that I put them all in one category," he said. "They all support the status quo in many ways."

Paul spoke to a crowd of around 200 people at the Pipac Centre on the Lake in Cedar Falls. Paul is investing a lot of money and attention this year in Iowa in hopes of winning both the Aug. 13 Iowa Straw Poll and the precinct caucuses later this year.

"When you think about the Ames Straw Vote, that's national news," he said. "It doesn't conclude anything, but it does get a lot of attention."

Paul's campaign won a coveted spot at the straw poll. His son Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., will be campaigning for his father later this year by making stops in Altoona, Ames, Cedar Rapids, Davenport, Des Moines, Dubuque, Mason City, Sioux City, Spencer and Waterloo.

Paul said he sees his son coming to Iowa as a "tremendous advantage" to his campaign
