Israel Budgets Billions for Plan to Attack Iran

Israel believes agreement reached on Iran’s nuclear program presents an existential threat

Despite what is characterized as substantive progress in talks between Iran, the United States, and the European Union on Iran’s nuclear program, the state of Israel has announced it is allocating in excess of 10 billion shekels for war preparations.

The Israeli newspaper Haaretz cites three members of the Knesset, Israel’s parliament, who say between 10 and 12 billion shekels, or between $2.89 and $3.47 billion, has been set aside for the attack on Iran. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon ordered the Israeli military to prepare for the attack, the newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Some members of the Knesset question whether the allocation has to do with progress between Iran and six Western nations and an agreement reached last November. The IDF said it had “received a clear directive from government officials from the political echelon – meaning Netanyahu and Ya’alon – to continue readying for a possible independent strike by Israel on the Iranian nuclear sites, regardless of the talks now happening between Iran and the West,” according to the three Knesset members.
Rhetoric from the Netanyahu government has escalated as talks on the Iranian program near a final accord. During the AIPAC conference in the United States earlier this month, Netanyahu said Israel is prepared to strike Iran’s nuclear enrichment facilities. “My friends, I believe that letting Iran enrich uranium would open up the floodgates,” he said. “That must not happen. And we will make sure it does not happen.”
Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said during a speech recently that Israel reserves the right to strike Iran and may do so if an accord is reached.
“We think that the United States should be the one leading the campaign against Iran. But the U.S. has entered talks with them and unfortunately, in the haggling in the Persian bazaar, the Iranians were better,” Ya’alon said. “Therefore, on this matter, we have to behave as though we have nobody to look out for us but ourselves.”

Russia Sanctions U.S. Officials, EU Suspends G8 Indefinitely

President Obama or any nation within the European Union can impose all the sanctions they want. The question is what will Vladimir Putin bear and what will he do in the form of actions in reaction following his swift response of sanctions on American officials.
What we can’t ascertain is how much Russia under Putin cares about its diminished place in the world as President Obama puts it. One major thing that Obama can do with his pen he has not done is unleash American energy and begin shipments to Europe. This is an effective economic tool against Russia and its use of energy as a weapon.
As we approach the warmer weather in Europe energy use shifts use and therefore reduces Putin’s ability to claim he’ll turn off the spigot while people are freezing in their homes. The window to do this is closing.
Obama keeps talking and issuing statements (below) and I wonder what Putin is doing while the line is open. Maybe Putin is playing chess.

Why Is Iran Building a Mock-Up of an American Nuclear-Powered Aircraft Carrier?

The Blaze
March 20, 2014

Iran is constructing a mock-up of an American nuclear-powered aircraft carried, the New York Times reports. However, officials say the vessel is non-functioning and the Iranians may be planning on blowing it up for propaganda purposes.
Intelligence analysts made the discovery last summer while studying satellite photos of Iranian military installations.
The mock-up, located near Bandar Abbas on the Persian Gulf, features the same distinctive shape and style of the U.S. Navy’s Nimitz-class carriers. It even reportedly features the Nimitz’s No. 68 and mock aircraft on the flight deck.

Cmdr. Jason Salata, a spokesman for the Navy’s Fifth Fleet in Bahrain, said “based on our observations, this is not a functioning aircraft carrier.”
“We’re not sure what Iran hopes to gain by building this. If it is a big propaganda piece, to what end?” he added.
Other Navy officials said Iran has used barges as targets for missile firing exercises, which were filmed and then aired on state-run TV.

Rivlin: Dividing Jerusalem will perpetuate the Jewish-Arab conflict

Jerusalem Post
March 18, 2014

Presidential candidate says government has neglected east Jerusalem; calls on Israel to extend full sovereignty over Arab residents.

Likud MK Reuven Rivlin, a leading candidate to replace President Shimon Peres when his term ends this summer, spoke out against dividing Jerusalem on Tuesday.
Speaking at a conference on the challenges that a peace agreement would pose to Jerusalem at Netanya Academic College, Rivlin said that dividing Jerusalem would exacerbate the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rather than solve it.
“The division of Jerusalem is the perpetuation of the Jewish- Arab conflict [from] pre- 1948 Jerusalem,” he said. “Jerusalem is very mixed. The Arab public was allowed to spread to the west, and this decision was made with clear knowledge that Jerusalem would not be divided – even Ben-Gurion and Moshe Dayan were against the division of Jerusalem.”
Rivlin said that the government had neglected east Jerusalem, and called on Israel to extend full sovereignty to eastern Jerusalem’s Arab neighborhoods.
“The government of Israel is responsible for the difficult situation in east Jerusalem, and in order to create a united Jerusalem, which is the desire of the majority of the Israeli public, we need real sovereignty,” Rivlin said. “In our leadership today it is very difficult to implement decisions, and therefore [our leaders] continue to maintain the status quo.”
Rivlin addressed his chances in the presidential race, and said that despite their ideological differences, he expected to receive votes from some Arab MKs.

8 Reasons Young Americans Don’t Fight Back: How the US Crushed Youth Resistance

Alternet
March 19, 2014

The ruling elite has created social institutions that have subdued young Americans and broken their spirit of resistance.

Traditionally, young people have energized democratic movements. So it is a major coup for the ruling elite to have created societal institutions that have subdued young Americans and broken their spirit of resistance to domination.
Young Americans—even more so than older Americans—appear to have acquiesced to the idea that the corporatocracy can completely screw them and that they are helpless to do anything about it. A 2010 Gallup poll asked Americans “Do you think the Social Security system will be able to pay you a benefit when you retire?” Among 18- to 34-years-olds, 76 percent of them said no. Yet despite their lack of confidence in the availability of Social Security for them, few have demanded it be shored up by more fairly payroll-taxing the wealthy; most appear resigned to having more money deducted from their paychecks for Social Security, even though they don’t believe it will be around to benefit them.
How exactly has American society subdued young Americans?
1. Student-Loan Debt. Large debt—and the fear it creates—is a pacifying force. There was no tuition at the City University of New York when I attended one of its colleges in the 1970s, a time when tuition at many U.S. public universities was so affordable that it was easy to get a B.A. and even a graduate degree without accruing any student-loan debt. While those days are gone in the United States, public universities continue to be free in the Arab world and are either free or with very low fees in many countries throughout the world. The millions of young Iranians who risked getting shot to protest their disputed 2009 presidential election, the millions of young Egyptians who risked their lives earlier this year to eliminate Mubarak, and the millions of young Americans who demonstrated against the Vietnam War all had in common the absence of pacifying huge student-loan debt.
Today in the United States, two-thirds of graduating seniors at four-year colleges have student-loan debt, including over 62 percent of public university graduates. While average undergraduate debt is close to $25,000, I increasingly talk to college graduates with closer to $100,000 in student-loan debt. During the time in one’s life when it should be easiest to resist authority because one does not yet have family responsibilities, many young people worry about the cost of bucking authority, losing their job, and being unable to pay an ever-increasing debt. In a vicious cycle, student debt has a subduing effect on activism, and political passivity makes it more likely that students will accept such debt as a natural part of life.
2. Psychopathologizing and Medicating Noncompliance. In 1955, Erich Fromm, the then widely respected anti-authoritarian leftist psychoanalyst, wrote, “Today the function of psychiatry, psychology and psychoanalysis threatens to become the tool in the manipulation of man.” Fromm died in 1980, the same year that an increasingly authoritarian America elected Ronald Reagan president, and an increasingly authoritarian American Psychiatric Association added to their diagnostic bible (then the DSM-III) disruptive mental disorders for children and teenagers such as the increasingly popular “oppositional defiant disorder” (ODD). The official symptoms of ODD include “often actively defies or refuses to comply with adult requests or rules,” “often argues with adults,” and “often deliberately does things to annoy other people.”
Many of America’s greatest activists including Saul Alinsky (1909–1972), the legendary organizer and author of  Reveille for Radicals  and Rules for Radicals , would today certainly be diagnosed with ODD and other disruptive disorders. Recalling his childhood, Alinsky said, “I never thought of walking on the grass until I saw a sign saying ‘Keep off the grass.’ Then I would stomp all over it.” Heavily tranquilizing antipsychotic drugs (e.g. Zyprexa and Risperdal) are now the highest grossing class of medication in the United States ($16 billion in 2010); a major reason for this, according to the Journal of the American Medical Association  in 2010, is that many children receiving antipsychotic drugs have nonpsychotic diagnoses such as ODD or some other disruptive disorder (this especially true of Medicaid-covered pediatric patients).

Gun Control

SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS!!!
Yahshua Matheny
March 20, 2014

Think about this: you’re eating out at some four-star, fancy restaurant. The best meal in the house has arrived, and you’ve taken your first bite of deliciousness. Suddenly, a man kicks the doors open and pulls out a rifle, spraying bullets everywhere. Everyone panics, with no one to defend themselves. You call for the police, and they arrive eleven minutes later, with ten injured and the gunman gone. All of this could’ve been prevented with a few concealed carry permits. You decide to get one the next day, and you’re told that the only handgun you can get has to hold a maximum of three rounds, eliminating most firearms available.

There should be less restrictive gun control laws, and more law abiding citizens should be armed. The main reason is for safety, as the police usually arrive after a crime is committed, allowing the criminal to escape and commit more illegal acts. Thus, more crime is committed, rather ironically, due to gun control. For example, if citizens are armed, they can protect themselves and others while possibly preventing a crime by non-lethally incapacitating an assailant. Secondly, since citizens are the victims, they can, quite obviously, take more action than the police since they’re already at the scene. Lastly, the right to keep and bare arms is outright a Constitutional one.

Statistically speaking, guns are used 2.5 million times a year, and citizens tend to kill more criminals than police do yearly, 1,527 to 606, a difference of 921, all according to Gun Owners of America. Also, according to a Harvard study, countries allowing gun control do not have fewer deaths. Criminals will attempt less crimes, knowing that their victims might be armed. Another reason to have less of the restrictive forms of gun control is that crime is increased by gun control laws. People need guns to defend themselves when they cannot physically do so. Besides, criminals will obtain weapons no matter what, regardless of laws as criminals tend to break the law. No one bans cars when some guy goes on a road rage, or knives when someone commits a murder with it, so why guns?

During 1976 through 1996, Washington D.C had very severe gun laws, along with the highest crime rate in the country, according to the Blaze, which is certainly not a coincidence. In complete contrast, Vermont has the nation’s most lenient gun laws and a very low crime rate, according to statistics provided by Disaster Center. The benefits of less gun control are numerous, but the main one is safety, because, like I stated earlier, criminals will try to avoid robbing or committing other criminal acts towards businesses or homes that are inhabited by gun owners.

An immediate counterpoint to this would be “Guns are the cause of tragedies such as mass shootings!” which is completely false. The reason behind such shootings is often a psychological one, and would occur with any instrument; a gun is not a magical, corrupting force tempting the owner to commit murder. If victims of mass shootings were armed they would’ve had a chance to at least defend themselves if they don’t survive. Depriving people of their Constitutional right to have a firearm is less restricting a mass murder weapon and more confiscating a tool for defense. Overall gun control is not something we should have, lest the safety of the people be at stake. It doesn’t reduce crime, it simply disarms civilians, and really, it’s just filled with backwards and faulty logic. Gun control is simply not an option.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Kremlin-backed journalist issued a stark warning to the United States about Moscow's nuclear capabilities on Sunday as the White House threatened sanctions over Crimea's referendum on union with Russia.

"Russia is the only country in the world that is realistically capable of turning the United States into radioactive ash," television presenter Dmitry Kiselyov said on his weekly current affairs show.
