Two South Florida nuclear power plants lie in Irma’s path. Are they ready?

The last time a major hurricane hit the Turkey Point nuclear power plant, it caused $90 million in damage but left the nuclear reactors along southern Biscayne Bay unscathed.
In anticipation of powerful Hurricane Irma, which projections on Wednesday showed headed straight for South Florida, Florida Power & Light’s two nuclear plants were finalizing staffing plans and cleaning up the grounds. But neither Turkey Point nor the St. Lucie plant farther up the coast had made the call yet to shutting down the plants.
Peter Robbins, spokesman for FPL, said shutting down a reactor is a gradual process, and the decision will be made “well in advance” of the storm making landfall.

German Government Urges Citizens To Stockpile Food, Water "In Case Of Attack Or Catastrophe"

Zero Hedge
August 22, 2016

For the first time since the end of the Cold War, the German government plans to tell citizens to stockpile food and water in case of an attack or catastrophe, the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung newspaper reported on Sunday.
Following Angela Merkel’s proclamation that Islamic terrorism is not a function of the massive influx of muslim immigrants into Germany thanks to he immigration policy, we could not help but be a little surprised that, as TagesSchau reports, the federal government, according to a newspaper report wants to encourage the population to begin stockpiling food and water again, so that they temporarily can take care of themself in the case of a disaster or an armed attack. As Reuters details,
Germany is currently on high alert after two Islamist attacks and a shooting rampage by a mentally unstable teenager last month. Berlin announced measures earlier this month to spend considerably more on its police and security forces and to create a special unit to counter cyber crime and terrorism.
“The population will be obliged to hold an individual supply of food for ten days,” the newspaper quoted the government’s “Concept for Civil Defence” – which has been prepared by the Interior Ministry – as saying.
The paper said a parliamentary committee had originally commissioned the civil defense strategy in 2012.
A spokesman for the Interior Ministry said the plan would be discussed by the cabinet on Wednesday and presented by the minister that afternoon. He declined to give any details on the content.
People will be required to stockpile enough drinking water to last for five days, according to the plan, the paper said.
…the precautionary measures demand that people “prepare appropriately for a development that could threaten our existence and cannot be categorically ruled out in the future,” the paper cited the report as saying.
A further priority should be more support of the armed forces by civilians, it added.
Germany’s Defence Minister said earlier this month the country lay in the “crosshairs of terrorism” and pressed for plans for the military to train more closely with police in preparing for potential large-scale militant attacks.
So apart from stockpiling enough food and water for 10 days; supporting the military; protecting yourself from “a threat to our existence,” everything is awesome and Merkel’s immigration policy has helped?
We ask – what do they know? Or is this simply more scare-mongering since “A nation in fear is even better influenced and controlled.”

Obama, From Afar, Tells Louisiana Residents How To Act While Recovering From Flooding

Western Journalism
August 20, 2016

"Is that really what you think of us?"

It appears there was one thing on the mind of President Barack Obama as he surveyed the devastation wrought in Louisiana by floodwaters that have forced thousands from their homes.
It was not personally coming to reassure citizens that the federal government cared about their suffering. In fact, it was not until after he was repeatedly badgered by Louisiana citizens and preceded to Louisiana by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump that Obama announced he would visit the state after the end of his vacation at Martha’s Vineyard.
On Tuesday, as the full extent of the destruction and misery of the state was just becoming clear, the Obama administration reached out to the state with the heavy hand of its bureaucracy to warn against racial discrimination.
In 16 pages of rules and regulations, the Justice Department warned Louisiana recipients of federal disaster assistance against “unlawful discrimination on the basis of race, color, or national origin (including limited English proficiency).”
The edit was sent to citizens as they desperately tried to save belongings or coped with life in emergency shelters to “highlight the importance of complying with non-discrimination requirements of civil rights statutes, addressing the needs of the whole community, and ensuring equal opportunity to access recovery efforts.”
Louisiana resident Rod Dreher took to the American Conservative this week to let Washington know just how it felt for Louisiana residents to want relief and get the rule book thrown at them.

Refugee Crisis Has Europe on the Brink

The New American

Refugee Crisis Has Europe on the Brink
PARIS — Despite some establishment efforts to put a smiley face on the growing chaos, the “refugee crisis” swamping Europe is deadly serious. In fact, even top government officials and establishment voices now acknowledge the growing problems, which range from widespread mass sexual assaults perpetrated by Middle Eastern refugees, to a heightened risk of jihadist terrorism, to the expansion and multiplication of Islamic-dominated enclaves where authorities fear to tread, sometimes dubbed “no-go zones.” For Europeans, especially those in countries facing the brunt of the crisis, such as Germany and Sweden, the situation is quickly going from bad to worse.
The refugee crisis, with millions of poor, non-Western immigrants from an alien culture flooding into Europe, often with the intent of settling there permanently but not assimilating, represents a fundamental transformation of Europe. And at this point, it appears that there is no going back. It could get worse, too, as estimates suggest that around one in every 120 or so people on the planet is now considered a refugee or internally displaced by the United Nations. Millions of those are hoping to settle in the West.
For many Westerners, the November 13 terrorist attacks in Paris, which resulted in the slaughter of about 130 victims and the wounding of almost 400, served as a major wake-up call. Paris, though, like other major European cities, had long faced difficulties with its rapidly growing foreign population. Indeed, a decade before the Paris attacks shocked the world, massive riots across Islamic immigrant-dominated areas of the French capital and beyond resulted in a number of civilians killed, more than 125 police and firefighters injured, and almost 3,000 arrests.
The wave of terrorist attacks were still a shock, of course, but they should not have been — the warning signs were everywhere. Paris had just come under a similar jihadist attack earlier in 2015, when Islamist gunmen massacred employees at a vulgar magazine infamous for ridiculing religion, God, and Muslims. Before that, Islamist militants had slaughtered a rabbi and some Jewish children in southern France. And authorities had long realized that they had a major problem that spanned across borders.
Some of the terrorists were operating out of Belgium. After the most recent Paris attacks, the New York Times quoted Belgian Home Affairs Minister Jan Jambon acknowledging that authorities there did not “have control of the situation in Molenbeek,” a neighborhood linked to numerous other terror attacks. Prime Minister Charles Michel acknowledged that the town — often described as a “no-go area,” one of many such areas proliferating across Europe — had developed quite a reputation for jihadism. “I notice that each time there is a link with Molenbeek,” he said after the Paris attack.
Similar enclaves can be found in France, Germany, Sweden, and other nations. This writer has visited several such areas, in the company of non-Western immigrants, and observed the situation firsthand. Despite occasional claims to the contrary, the no-go zones are neither a myth nor an isolated phenomenon. Police, when they do come, arrive in caravans of squad cars, often wearing bullet-proof vests. Drug dealing takes place in the open, in broad daylight, right in the town square. Women, who have two to four times the fertility rate of native Europeans, are almost all wearing hijabs or niqabs. Natives are rarely seen. The signs are often in Arabic, and shopkeepers regularly do not speak the native language beyond some basic terms. In some cases as much as 90 percent of the population is non-Western. And asking around, residents are more than happy to tell you about how their host nation should be governed by sharia law. There are numerous videos online of “sharia patrols” on European streets where Islamists, operating outside the law, try to intimidate natives into submitting to Islamic law. While some admit to participating in what Islamists refer to as a hijra — Islamic migration to spread Islam — many express concern about the massive, uncontrolled waves of refugees and migrants pouring across the borders. The areas feel more like the Middle East than Europe.

Ebola Researcher: Disease Could Go Airborne at Any Moment

Ebola Researcher: Disease Could Go Airborne at Any Moment
Ebola transmitted as easily as the common flu, in an airborne fashion? This could become a reality as the Ebola epidemic continues, says a Purdue University researcher who has been studying the disease for 15 years.
In a pair of Fox News interviews, professor of biological science Dr. David Sanders pointed out that while there’s no evidence of true “airborne Ebola” at this time, it conceivably is just one viral mutation away. On the Monday edition of The Real Story with Gretchen Carlson, Dr. Sanders “explained that a very closely related virus is known to spread among animals via the air,” writes Fox News Insider blog. The site continues:
Sanders also pointed to the way in which the virus enters the body.

Experts: Civilians not ready for EMP-caused blackout

Watchdog.org
April 21, 2014

The catastrophic effects of an electromagnetic pulse-caused blackout could be preventable, but experts warn the civilian world is still not ready.
Peter Vincent Pry, executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and director of the U.S. Nuclear Strategy Forum, both congressional advisory boards, said the technology to avoid disaster from electromagnetic pulses exists, and upgrading the nation’s electrical grid is financially viable.
“The problem is not the technology,” Pry said. “We know how to protect against it. It’s not the money, it doesn’t cost that much. The problem is the politics. It always seems to be the politics that gets in the way.”
IT’S STOPPABLE: Peter Vincent Pry says technology exists to protect against the damage from electromagnetic pulses.
He said the more officials plan, the lower the estimated cost gets.
“If you do a smart plan — the Congressional EMP Commission estimated that you could protect the whole country for about $2 billion,” Pry told Watchdog.org. “That’s what we give away in foreign aid to Pakistan every year.”
In the first few minutes of an EMP, nearly half a million people would die. That’s the worst-case scenario that author William R. Forstchen estimated in 2011 would be the result of an EMP on the electric grid — whether by an act of God, or a nuclear missile detonating in Earth’s upper atmosphere.
An electromagnetic pulse is a burst of electromagnetic energy strong enough to disable, and even destroy, nearby electronic devices.

Obama Tells Wealthy Gathering He Wants To “Institutionalize” Crisis Atmosphere

Cites aftermath of Boston terrorism as way of moving agenda forward

Complaining about a lack of community spirit in Washington DC, the president said Sunday that he wishes to see institutionalized the kind of atmosphere that emerged in Boston following the recent terrorist bombings, so his administration can get things done.
Obama made the comments while speaking to wealthy millionaires at a fundraiser inside a five-story mansion owned by Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein. Only 60 guests were present at the event, with names from banking, fashion and entertainment, including singer Justin Timberlake, actress Jessica Biel, and designer Tommy Hilfiger.
“More than anything, what I will be striving for over the next three and a half years is to see if that spirit we saw in Boston and West Texas, to see if we can institutionalize that [and] if we can create a framework where everybody’s working together and moving this country forward,” Obama is quoted as saying in a press pool report highlighted by The Daily Caller.
Obama is clearly referring to the Boston attacks, as well as the explosion at a fertilizer plant in West, Texas last month. In both situations, communities were reduced to states of confusion, panic and fear in the face of crisis.
Obama is said to have noted that such events have a positive impact of rallying Americans together, and that such an impact should be made commonplace.
The comments are reminiscent of those by Obama’s former Chief-of-Staff Rahm Emnauel, who notoriously stated “You never let a serious crisis go to waste. And what I mean by that it’s an opportunity to do things you think you could not do before.”
Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also infamously said, “never waste a good crisis.”
The idea of the permanent crisis is a long standing one. In his book Liberal Fascism: The Secret History of the American Left, which documents the origins and nature of fascist movements, columnist Jonah Goldberg notes that “The utility of terror was multi-faceted, but among its chief benefits was the tendency to maintain a permanent sense of crisis. Crisis is routinely identified as a core mechanism of fascism because it short-circuits debate and democratic deliberation” (42-43).
Indeed, with regards to terror threats, the US is still officially in a state of emergency declared On September 11, 2001 and formally put into writing three days later by George W. Bush. The state of emergency has been extended every year since, and continues to be renewed annually by Obama.
Although it is constantly argued that this action violates the Constitution, it continues to be re-declared, invoking several war-time powers that give the president greater control of the military. Those powers include the ability to suspend retirements and separations of military personnel, recall the Ready Reserve, activate recently-retired Coast Guard officers and personnel, and prohibit or regulate financial transactions with foreign entities involved in terrorism.
There are far too many stipulations of the state of emergency to list here, as it activates some 500 legal provisions, including those allowing the president to effectively impose censorship and martial law.
So not only is the president saying that he wishes to institutionalize a crisis state, he is actively doing so. Of course, Congress has the power to revoke the state of emergency, but that isn’t likely to happen any time soon.
During Monday’s fundraiser, Obama went on to blame opposition to his administration in Washington on “hyper-partisanship”, and specifically on radio host Rush Limbaugh:
“What’s blocking us right now is a sort of hyper-partisanship in Washington that I was, frankly, hoping to overcome in 2008 … My thinking was when we beat them in 2012 that might break the fever, and it’s not quite broken yet,” he said.
“But I am persistent,” he added. “And I am staying at it. And I genuinely believe that there are actually Republicans out there who would like to work with us but they’re fearful of their base and they’re concerned about what Rush Limbaugh might say about them.”
“As a consequence, we get the kind of gridlock that makes people cynical about government and inhibits our progress.” he stated.
“If there are folks who are more interested in winning elections than they are thinking about the next generation then I want to make sure there are consequences to that,” he said, in what could be interpreted as a veiled threat.
Later in the afternoon, Obama addressed yet another 60-person fundraiser hosted by Alexandra Stanton, a former advisory to ex-Gov. David Paterson, and her husband, Sam Natapoff. Tickets to each event ranged from $16,200 to $20,000 and benefited the DNC.
In the evening, Obama spoke at another elite fundraiser at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, also featuring Rep. Nancy Pelosi and Senator Chuck Schumer. The final event was attended by approximately 140 guests paying between $7,500 and $32,400. In total the president is thought to have raised over $3 million by speaking to less than 300 people.
At the end of the dinner, Obama reportedly told attendees that they were “investing in people who share your values and your vision for the future.” before repeating the same desire to “institutionalize” the crisis atmosphere.
“It’s that spirit that we saw in West, Texas; it’s the spirit we saw in Boston; it’s the spirit that we see here in New York City, and as I was driving up and saw the new Freedom Tower rising, it reminded me of just what it is that we’re fighting for.” he stated.

Obama "Sandy" Storm aid bill filled with holiday goodies unrelated to storm damage

Editor's Note: More government abuse and the excuse once again used is "crisis"...

December 17, 2012
WASHINGTON — President Obama’s $60.4 billion request for Hurricane Sandy relief has morphed into a huge Christmas stocking of goodies for federal agencies and even the state of Alaska, The Post has learned.
The pork-barrel feast includes more than $8 million to buy cars and equipment for the Homeland Security and Justice departments. It also includes a whopping $150 million for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to dole out to fisheries in Alaska and $2 million for the Smithsonian Institution to repair museum roofs in DC.
An eye-popping $13 billion would go to “mitigation” projects to prepare for future storms.

Other big-ticket items in the bill include $207 million for the VA Manhattan Medical Center; $41 million to fix up eight military bases along the storm’s path, including Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; $4 million for repairs at Kennedy Space Center in Florida; $3.3 million for the Plum Island Animal Disease Center and $1.1 million to repair national cemeteries.
Budget watchdogs have dubbed the 94-page emergency-spending bill “Sandy Scam.”
Matt Mayer of the conservative Heritage Foundation slammed the request as an “enormous Christmas gift worth of stuff.”
“The funding here should be focused on helping the community and the people, not replacing federal assets or federal items,” he said.
Republican lawmakers say the lack of details and justifications for the spending will delay approval until after Christmas, while they analyze and document what spending is “appropriate.”
“To throw out a number this large without in-depth analysis and formal request detailing the basis for it I think is premature and I wouldn’t support that,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions (R-Ala.).
Gov. Cuomo yesterday warned Congress not to hold up the money.
“There is no Plan B,” declared Cuomo at a press conference at the governor’s office in Manhattan, where he was joined by business and union leaders.
Mayor Bloomberg, however, called for careful scrutiny of the federal spending.
“You would think they’d want to ask questions before they give away the public’s money,” the mayor said on his radio program.
